I have been passionate about music and the piano for almost as long as I can remember. The first instrument I learnt was the cello when I was 8, after which I went on to learn the guitar, piano, drums, accordion and the bass; along the way falling in love with every style of music from jazz and classical to electronic and rock. My initial piano playing was very classical focused with my favourite composers being Chopin and Debussy. However, after hearing John Coltrane’s ‘My Favourite Things’, I became more and more passionate about all things jazzy! My love for music meant that when it came to picking a subject for university there was only one option which led me to study music at the University of Sheffield.
After having taught siblings and friends for a year, last year I started teaching pupils all over Sheffield and found a passion for helping pupils achieve their musical potential. Having been the student of many teachers, I have experienced many different styles of teaching and believe that a student-tailored approach is the best way to learn. I always prioritise teaching music that the pupils want to learn and don’t require pupils to take graded exams, unless they want to of course. I will always push my pupils to explore new music and will often give ‘listening homework’ to encourage listening to a broad range of genres.
Like my love of music, my love of the piano applies to all genres, from Chopin and Elton John through to Art Tatum and Freddy Mercury. I will always aim to maximise my pupil’s love for music and help them into the best pianist they can be.
