About Us

Welcome to Sheffield Piano Academy

Sheffield Piano Academy is a collective of keyboard-based instrumentalists and composers who all share the common goal of helping students to reach their musical potential.

All teachers at Sheffield Piano Academy have numerous years of teaching experience in the local community behind them ensuring that all students are in capable hands. Every teacher here is a little bit different with varying specialisms so that we can cater to all students’ needs.

Students at the academy are treated as individuals with their own way of learning. Musical expression is rich and varied so learning to play it should not take a one-size-fits-all approach. Here, instead of curriculums and pre-determined goals, you will find every single lesson underpinned by our values:

Sheffield Piano Lessons

Our Ethos

Independence

01

Our aim is for you to become self-sufficient behind the piano. You won’t always have a teacher next to you so we make sure that all students have a solid understanding of not just what they are playing but how they should be playing it.

Musicianship

02

Don’t be a pianist, be a musician. There is so much more to being a complete piano player than just putting your fingers on the correct notes. Here at Sheffield Music Academy we take a holistic approach to make sure that you are prepared for any musical scenario. This involves diving in to the exciting world of music theory, harmony and rhythm.

Lifestyle

03

Our teachers encourage their students to make and listen to music as part of their everyday lives. This increases the likelihood of adherence to healthy practise patterns and a lifelong love of the piano.

Our Approach

Individuals vary in their goals and the speed at which they learn but all students will want to make some kind of progress. Beginners typically overestimate how much they can achieve in a week but underestimate how much they can achieve in a year. Using techniques like a practise diary students, under the expert guidance of their teachers, will learn to celebrate incremental change towards their goals.

Our Lessons

Years of successful teaching in the Sheffield area have led previous Sheffield Piano Academy students to have great success in ABRSM piano grades and theory exams, perform successfully to local audiences and even go on to study music at university. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has shown that piano can now be learned successfully online. This has led us to be able to offer piano lessons from the comfort of your own computer screen. We are now pleased to be able to offer the following.

    • Sheffield Piano Lessons
Professional, face-to face-teaching from our teachers’ studios
    • Piano lessons in your own home available upon request
    • Online piano lessons
    • All teachers fully insured and DBS (formerly CRB) checked.
    • Theory lessons available
    • Classical, Pop and Jazz styles taught
    • Preparation for ABRSM Piano and Theory exams. 100% pass rate.

Above all else, lessons at Sheffield Piano Academy are designed to be enjoyable. All of our teachers are friendly and their obvious enthusiasm about music is contagious. Our students learn more than just the piano in their lessons. Through our tuition you may become aware of:

    • An increase in confidence
    • Better cognitive processing
    • Better posture in your everyday life
    • An improved appreciation of music
    • Greater motivation and self-discipline

The chances are that if you’re on this website, you already love music. If you’d like to take this love to the next stage then, wherever you live, there is no better place than Sheffield Piano Academy.

Exams

We never insist upon exams but we realise that they work well for some students and there can be a great sense of accomplishment when they are successfully completed. We teach to the ABRSM syllabus in which all of their exams feature sections on: Playing piano pieces. Technical exercises including scales and arpeggios. Sight reading – Reading and playing a piece of music you’ve never seen before. Aural – Listening to music played by the examiner and verbally feeding back on some of the details. This also includes a little bit of singing and clapping (don’t worry, they don’t assess the quality of your voice!) If this all sounds a bit scary then please don’t worry. We will never submit you for an exam that you are not ready for and we will walk you through the exam process every step of the way. You will have a mock exam with your teacher in which exam conditions are replicated as closely as possible and you’ll even get a feedback sheet just like you would in the real thing. All of our teachers have sat these exams (and then some!) themselves before so they understand the process inside out and have got pretty good at predicting your grade. Grades provide a nice framework for practise but your teacher will supplement this framework with extra materials to make sure you are a fully comprehensive musician and not just ticking musical boxes. For more information about grades and our approach to them, please feel free to get in touch!
